Who this card is for
A good fit if you…
- Households whose month is restaurants, grocery, streaming, gym-and-utility memberships, and bills — the 5x list in the card’s features — and who will redeem MBNA Rewards instead of forgetting them.
- Applicants with personal income over $80,000 or household income of $150,000 or more (MBNA’s World Elite requirement) who will pay the card in full.
- Travellers who want built-in coverage on an everyday card: MBNA lists travel medical up to $2 million for the first 21 days of a trip (under age 65), flight/trip delay, delayed and lost baggage, rental car collision damage waiver, and mobile device insurance.
- Shoppers who want a Mastercard they can use at Costco and small merchants, with a catch-all 1x, rather than locking rewards into Amazon.ca.
Skip it if you…
- Amazon.ca regulars whose Whole Foods and Marketplace spend dwarfs dining. That cobrand is $0 and pays Amazon’s program, not MBNA Rewards.
- Applicants who do not need World Elite extras. Platinum Plus currently lists $0 and accelerated earn on a similar everyday list, without this fee.
- People who wanted pick-your-categories 2% cash back. Tangerine Money-Back is $0 and does not need a points catalogue.
- Anyone who revolves a balance. Five points per dollar will not outrun the purchase rate.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 5 points per dollar on dining, groceries, digital media, memberships, and household utilities is a wider everyday stack than grocery-only bank cards.
- 1 point per dollar elsewhere is printed, so Amazon and gas do not fall to zero even if they miss 5x.
- Each year the account gets Birthday Bonus Points equal to 10% of the points earned in the previous 12 months, up to 15,000 points — an ongoing perk, not only a signup dump.
- Built-in travel medical, trip delay, baggage, rental car and mobile device coverage, plus a price protection service, which many no-fee points cards skip.
- World Elite Mastercard acceptance includes Costco Canada, even if warehouse spend is likely the 1x bucket unless it codes as grocery.
Cons
- The annual fee has to be earned in the gap between this 5x stack and Platinum Plus’s no-fee accelerated earn. If you barely dine out, the fee is a membership in a restaurant club you do not visit.
- Additional cards cost $50 each per year, and the 5x rate stops once you spend $50,000 in a category in a calendar year.
- MBNA Rewards redeemed as merchandise or statement credit can be worth less than the marketing envelope.
- The welcome bonus is not available to Quebec residents, and 10,000 of the 30,000 points depend on switching to paperless statements within 90 days.
- Merchant coding still applies. A grocery banner that processes as a mass merchant, or a “utility” paid by e-transfer, can miss 5x.
Fees and value: is the annual fee worth it?
First-year snapshot (estimate)
- Annual fee
- $120
- Estimated welcome bonus value
- approximately $245 in cash back value ($165 spend bonus + $80 paperless bonus)
- Bonus minus fee (estimate)
- $125
This is a simple comparison of the estimated welcome-bonus value against the annual fee. It ignores rewards on spending, credits you have to remember to use, and interest if you carry a balance. Offers change — verify with the issuer.
MBNA lists a $120 annual fee and $50 for each additional card. There is no first-year rebate.
Year one is the welcome bonus (MBNA estimates roughly $165 in cash back value for the spend bonus and about $80 for the paperless bonus) plus 5x on the everyday list. Year two is $120 versus 5x dining/grocery/streaming/memberships/utilities, 1x on the rest, and a birthday bonus if MBNA still pays it.
If Amazon.ca is the statement, the $0 cobrand wins. If two Tangerine categories cover the month, Tangerine wins at $0.
If you wanted the same personality without World Elite income, Platinum Plus is the fee-free MBNA Rewards door. Offers change.

Rewards and earn rates explained
Rewards program: MBNA Rewards
This card earns MBNA Rewards points, MBNA’s flexible catalogue currency — not Amazon.ca Rewards, not Aeroplan, and not cash back you can send to any bank without converting. MBNA currently lists 5 points per dollar on eligible restaurant, grocery, digital media, membership, and household utility purchases until you spend $50,000 a year in the applicable category, and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases.
Each year you also get Birthday Bonus Points equal to 10% of the points earned in the 12 months before your birthday month, up to 15,000 points. MBNA values points at 100 per $1 for travel and 120 per $1 for cash back or charity, and points do not expire while the account is open and in good standing.
Platinum Plus currently describes accelerated earn on a similar everyday list at $0. Redeem through MBNA’s rewards centre.
Put restaurants, grocery, streaming, and utilities here; put Amazon.ca on the cobrand if that order is huge; put chosen 2% categories on Tangerine if you would rather skip points entirely.
Welcome bonus: how to unlock it
Earn up to 30,000 bonus MBNA Rewards points
The current offer is up to 30,000 bonus MBNA Rewards points: 20,000 points after $2,000 in eligible purchases in the first 90 days, and 10,000 points for enrolling in paperless e-statements within the first 90 days. MBNA estimates those at roughly $165 and $80 in cash back value.
The offer is not available to Quebec residents and can change without notice. Judge the card on the 5x stack, the birthday bonus, and the fee versus Platinum Plus.
Welcome bonus eligibility: Must be approved for the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard. Limit one bonus of each type per new account. Not available to residents of Quebec. Offer may be amended or cancelled at any time without notice.
FAQ
Is the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard worth it in 2026?
It is worth it when dining, grocery, streaming, and utilities are large enough that 5x minus the fee beats a $0 MBNA or Tangerine card, and you meet World Elite income. It is not worth it as an Amazon cobrand or as a card you revolve.
MBNA Rewards World Elite vs Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard?
Amazon.ca Rewards is MBNA’s $0 cobrand for Amazon.ca and Whole Foods, with 1% elsewhere. This World Elite card pays MBNA Rewards on a dining/grocery/utilities stack at a fee. Choose Amazon’s cobrand if Amazon.ca is the category. Choose World Elite if restaurants and bills dwarf the Amazon order and you will use the catalogue.
World Elite vs MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus?
Platinum Plus currently lists no annual fee and accelerated earn on restaurants, groceries, digital media, memberships, and utilities. World Elite currently prints 5x on that list, a birthday bonus, and a $120-class fee.
Choose World Elite if those multipliers and extras clear the fee. Choose Platinum Plus if you wanted MBNA Rewards without World Elite income or a membership.
MBNA Rewards World Elite vs Tangerine Money-Back?
Tangerine lets you pick 2% cash-back categories at $0. MBNA World Elite pays points on a fixed 5x list. Choose Tangerine if you want dollars and control. Choose MBNA if the fixed everyday stack matches the month and you like the catalogue.
Does this card charge foreign-exchange fees?
Most Canadian World Elite Mastercards add a foreign-conversion fee on foreign-currency purchases. This is an everyday points card, not a no-FX Passport. For overseas spend, compare Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite, and confirm MBNA’s current FX rate in the agreement.
